Katschberg - Winter Skiing Holidays
Katschberg- Rennweg: Winter Fairytale for Families and Sun Skiers
The skiing-centre Katschberg-Rennweg, located at the border between Salzburg and Carinthia, is surrounded by the “Hohen- and Niederen Tauern” - mountain range in the north and the Gurktaler Alpen in the south. The family- has become a “Hot Spot” to all winter sports- and wellness-fans. Most of all, because of its altitude (1.640-2.220m), which combines the snow guarantee of the main ridge of the Alps with the sunny southern side of the Alps.
The skiing area Katschberg-Aineck includes 16 ski lifts and 60 km well groomed ski slopes on the mountains Aineck and Tschaneck. Because of the broad ski runs and the short queuing times at the lifts, the ski resort has become an insider tip for epicures on ski and board. 100 % of the ski slopes can be covered with snow by a state-of-the-art snowmaking system. So there is no restriction to winter sports, even under the warm March sun. The Katschberg can be reached via Tauernautobahn (A10). After the exit at the Rennweg or St. Michael turnoff, it takes about 10 min (6 km) to reach the centre of the ski-resort.
Even quicker by plane: Airport transfer from Salzburg or Klagenfurt (return ticket: adult EUR 50,-- children under 3 years free, up to 14 years 50% discount).
The two horse-powered „Bio-Lift“ on Katschberg
To gallop through snow covered landscapes on Katschberg - for all who want to “back the right horse” when it comes to sun skiing, horse shoes and sleigh-skids are part of the chummily winter program on Katschberg. The “Alpine Pferdezentrum Katschberg”, an alpine horse riding centre, is not only the right venue for indoor and outdoor riding lessons, horse and pony riding. The ones who enjoy cross country riding and romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides will also be satisfied. Wrapped up in warm woollen blankets, you will enjoy the winter landscape and discover the special spots on Katschberg. The bristling of the “Noriker”-horses, the warm smell of the stables and the wonderful homemade Schnapps of the local farmers will leave their “horse-strong” impressions on your memory. Katschberg’s bio-lift is one unique experience: After a guided powder-snow ski-trip off the slopes, powerful Noriker horses are waiting to pull you back to the centre of the ski-resort. Fans of winter hikes will take the “lift” back from the Pritzhütte, huddled together and wrapped up in warm woollen blankets.
Fire & Ice: Crystal-clear Nights in the Mountains for Snow-romantics
The winter nights on Katschberg are long - not only because the sun goes down earlier. The true reason is, that the vast majority of bars and restaurants can be reached on ski.
The Après-Ski on Carinthia’s Katschberg Mountain has still a lot do with the classical “Einkehrschwung”, the well-known form of nightlife-socializing. There are also many alternative “nighttime pleasures” - a well designed activity program is responsible for that. For example: Fire&Ice is the theme of a romantic hike with torches to the Gamskogelhütte, located at the slopes of Tschaneck, which offers a beautiful variation of the unique atmosphere in Alpine chalets and shelters, better know as “Hüttenzauber”. Afterwards one takes the 1, 5 km long toboggan run back to the centre of the ski-resort. Whoever has enjoyed something like that, won’t miss the opportunity to spend a very special night in the mountains: Wrapped up in thick woollen blankets, a horse-drawn sleigh brings you to the idyllic Pritzhütte, where a hearty snack gives you the energy for the following outdoor-experience: On snow shoes you will make a guided tour to discover the most beautiful spots on Katschberg. The walk will lead through the snowcovered landscape to Gamskogehütte, from where one takes the sledge back to Katschberghöhe.
